KERCKHOFF RESIDENCE

URBAN SITE PLAN

A BUNGALOW FROM 1924 SITUATED ON PRESTINE SOUTHERN SHORES OF LOS ANGELES CITY BLOCKS AWAY TO THE HARBOR OF SAN PEDRO. THE PROJECT TAKES ON A RENOVATION OF THE BUILDING’S ESSENCES AND BEAUTY OF WHAT MADE BUNGALOW SO CHARACTERISTICALLY CONNECTED TO SOUTHERN’S CALIFORNIA’S WARM WEATHER.

THE PROJECT IS A RENOVATION AND CONVERTION OF THE GARAGE INTO AN ADU BY BRINGING IN MORE LIGHT, OPENNESS, AND CROSS VENTILATION. ALL THE WHILE ENCAPSULATING THE GROWTH OF A FAMILY BY INTEGRATING MORE LIVING QUATERS.

SUCH IS THE SOUL OF THE PROJECT TO CONNECT WITH ITS ENVIORMENT THROUGH THE USE OF A PORCH, THIS WAS EXPANDED TO THE OPEN SPACE BETWEEN BUILDINGS ALLOWING BOTH BUILDINGS THE USE OF THIS SPACE AND THROUGH DIRECT CONNECTION.

EXISTING FLOOR PLANS

AN UNORTHODOX APPROACH TO WHAT A BUNGALOW IS, THE PROJECT ORIGINAL LAYOUT DIVDED THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SPACES FROM EACH OTHER, GIVING THE FRONT BUILDING THE PUBLIC SPACES WHILE, NESTING THE PRIVATE AREAS IN THE BACK BUILDING. THIS DISSASSOCIATION BETWEEN PROGRAM MAKES THE USE OF SPACE COMPLICATED, YET THE ONLY CONNECTION BETWEEN THEM IS THRU A BREEZEWAY.

PROPOSED FLOOR PLANS

THE NEW APPROACH TO THE PROJECT WAS TO KEEP THE NESTED IDEA BUT ENCLOSED WITHIN EACH STRUCTURE. THIS ALLOWED FOR EACH BUILDING TO BE ITS OWN SINGLE FAMILY DWELLING WITHOUT HAVING TO LEAVE THE SPACE BEING OCCUPIED. YET THE BREEZEWAY STAYS AND BECOMES AN ASSOCIATION TO A SHARE BACKYARD TO BRING TOGETHER THE USERS OF THESE TWO DWELLINGS ONTO A HARMONIZING AND LIVELY CORRIDOR FOR COOKOUTS, AND LATE NIGHT CONVERSATIONS.
